AEW Media Arts: Immersive VR

Media Arts Exhibition:
Gina Kim's powerful VR trilogy on US military violence in South Korea and Crystal Chan's interactive audio experience at Goethe-Institut Montréal.

For the 12th Korean Film Festival Canada, Arts East-West (AEW) presents an immersive exhibition featuring acclaimed Korean filmmaker Gina Kim (@gina_kim_films), who reshape how we understand trauma, identity, and the body in motion through VR and soundscape experiences.

Gina Kim’s Retrospective: Comfortless Trilogy — Bloodless (2017), Tearless (2021), and Comfortless (2023) — invites audiences into the hidden history of women in US military camp towns in Korea. Through powerful VR storytelling, she gives voice to lives erased by imperialism and violence. Internationally awarded and showcased around the world, these films are raw, haunting, and urgent.

회고록: Comfortless Trilogy
이 VR 스토리텔링 전시는 지나 킴의 "Comfortless Trilogy"의 일부로, 3부작 VR 영화 "Bloodless"(2017, 12분) , "Tearless"(2021, 12분) , "Comfortless"(2023, 16분)로 구성됩니다 . 이 3부작은 한국 내 미군 기지촌의 역사를 탐구하며, 소외된 목소리를 통해 동서양을 연결하는 Arts East-West의 사명과 일맥상통합니다. 기술을 활용하여 국내외적으로 문화 및 예술적 담론을 촉진합니다.

1992년 한국에서 미군에게 살해당한 성 노동자의 마지막 날을 그린 영화 '블러드리스 (Bloodless, 2017)' 는 제74회 베니스 국제 영화제에서 최우수 VR 스토리상, 제58회 테살로니키 국제 영화제에서 최우수 VR 영화상, 제15회 보고타 단편 영화제에서 최우수 VR 단편 영화상을 수상했습니다.

<티어리스> (2020)는 1970년대 성병 감염 의심으로 미군 위안부를 격리하고 치료하기 위해 설립된 의료 감옥인 몽키 하우스의 잔해를 탐구합니다. 베니스 영화제에서 처음 공개된 이 영화는 제네바 국제 영화제에서 최우수 몰입형 작품상을 수상했습니다. <위로> (2023) 역시 베니스 영화제에서 처음 공개되었고, 이후 국립현대미술관에 전시되었습니다. 로케이션 촬영을 통해 이 영화는 주한 미 공군 기지를 위해 건설된 사창가 단지인 "아메리칸 타운"에 관객들을 몰입시킵니다.

(2023) 역시 베니스에서 초연되었고, 이후 국립현대미술관에서 전시되었습니다. 로케이션 촬영된 이 영화는 주한 미 공군기지 전용으로 건설된 사창가 단지인 "아메리칸 타운"에 관객을 몰입시킵니다.

세 작품 모두 국제적인 호평을 받았으며, 한국영상자료원, 서울국제여성영화제, 암스테르담 시네마아시아 영화제 등 전 세계 유수한 장소에서 회고전이 열렸습니다.
